December 2, 2024 Beacon - Globe Cambridge High School

Co-President Drina opened the meeting at 6:10 p.m.  She introduced our guests Sam and Celine from Globe Cambridge High School on Pine Street North.  Drina read our land acknowledgement, led us in our toast and Kevin Moore said Grace.

(Celine had to leave before the end of the meeting when the photo was taken.)

After a delicious ham dinner and a special Happy Birthday to Paul Binkley, our guests Sam and Celine told us more about what is going on at Globe Cambridge High School.  They currently have 17 students registered, all from China.  They have a capacity at the school of 100 students.  Scholarships for local students are available.  They are focused on grades 9 – 12, and they are looking to build partnership opportunities with Port Hope High School.

Several announcements were shared.  Kevin Moore spoke about Rev Kev’s Walk, and thanked Rotary for their generous donation to the Youth Hub from the Philps Trust Fund. Over $20,000 has been raised for the Youth Wellness Hub.  He also spoke about the Interact club started at the High School, and the volunteer participation of several of the students on the walk.

Kevin also told the club that Lorenzo has moved on to his second host family, Heather and Rob Liotti.  They live on Walton Street.  Thank you to Kevin and Lori Moore for being Lorenzo’s first host parents!  Rotarians are encouraged to plan an activity to do with Lorenzo this Rotary year so that we all help to make his exchange year in Port Hope a great one.

Co-President Steve Tallo spoke about Rotary’s participation in the Candlelight Walk, November 29, 2024, running a warming center along with the mayor and town councilors at the Knights of Columbus Hall.  Rotarians sold goodies from our Holiday Market.  There was a fire pit for people to warm up and they served coffee, tea and hot chocolate.
